EDPA ACCESS 2023 Recap

EDPA ACCESS 2023 Recap

After a day of fishing, golf, and catching up with old friends, a record number of EDPA ACCESS attendees (325) entered the world of motorcycles. It’s not a trip to Sturgis but a fascinating kickoff address by Paul Teutel Jr. on how he designs and builds motorcycles that promote brands. In other words, in keeping with our theme, how he CUSTOMIZES THE EXPERIENCE! With some of his bikes behind him on the stage, Teutel explained his process and how he incorporates brand assets into every cycle. Frankly, the audience was astounded when he explained that there was no ongoing approval process for his work.

Finishing up photo ops with Teutul and the bikes, the group moved to the outdoor patio for the opening dinner, anticipating the next full day of content. First up, Jonna Mendez, the former Chief of Disguise with the CIA, did not disappoint. Her anecdotes and insights were riveting, including her pursuit of her career despite gender bias. Her place in the CIA, where she originally hoped to work as a photographer, earned the CIA’s Intelligence Commendation Medal for her operational disguise work from Havana to Beijing to Moscow and ultimately into the Oval Office.  “I stopped trying to be one of the boys,” she said at the end of her presentation.

Next up was Dr. Tracey Wilen, a researcher and speaker on the impact of technology on society, work, and careers. She described our “VUCU” work environment--short for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, or a catchall for, “Hey, it’s crazy out there!” Taking the group into lunch was Jane Gentry’s presentation that focused on transitioning, training, and empowering people to develop leadership skills to enable successful change initiatives.

At lunch, attendees listened to the annual State of the Association, and the outlook is very positive. During breaks, they could visit the Engagement Zone, where exhibitors shared information on their latest products.

Han Leehouts delivered an introduction to AI, a topic that attempted to shed light on the technology. Following the presentation, he joined a panel on AI and design. This latter was part of the agenda’s Future Focus, which included a workshop by Tracey Wilen and a Thursday session from Teresa Freeman on maximizing your potential using insights from the Gallup organization. Although not restricted to the Future Leaders, the Future Focus offerings were designed to meet the interests of EDPA’s Future Leaders.

The annual Gala and the silent auction were unqualified successes, and additional funds were collected for the efforts of the Future Workforce committee. EDPA’s current president, Dan Serebin shared his farewell address and incoming president, Chris Griffin was welcomed to his new role.

The highlight of the gala is always the presentation of awards—the coveted Eddies, Chapters of the Year, Future Leaders, and individual awards for the Designer of the Year, EDPA Ambassador, and the Hazel Hays award. This year, the awards went to:

Thursday was data-focused. Women in Exhibitions met for breakfast, after which Jeremy Bess spoke to the entire group, attempting to demystify economic terminology and offer strategic financial insights to drive fiscal wellness. Amy Sondrup, president of Access TCA, and Kerry Smith of Event Marketer shared data from surveys exploring the relationships and expectations of end users and experiential partners, focusing on budgets, factors in decision-making, and other areas that influence collaboration. Joe Federbush presented the EDPA Compensation and Economic Survey findings, while Glenn Hansen, CEO of Reduce 2, introduced the new sustainability standards specific to the exhibition industry that EDPA has developed in partnership with ESCA. The event wrapped up with the Chapter Challenge which produced smiles and a winner’s belt for the Texas division.

Be sure to save the dates for ACCESS 2024 being held December 3rd- 5th, 2024 in Palm Springs, California at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells.  We hope to see you there!

EXHIBIT CITY NEWS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

EXHIBIT CITY NEWS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
In an era when the tradeshow industry was still finding its voice, Don Svehla was already shaping its narrative. Three decades later, Svehla’s creation, Exhibit City News, continues to be the paramount print and digital news resource since its inception in 1994.

In an era when the tradeshow industry was still finding its voice, Don Svehla was already shaping its narrative. Three decades later, Svehla’s creation, Exhibit City News, continues to be the paramount print and digital news resource since its inception in 1994.

"My vision was always to celebrate the people and companies behind the scenes,” explains Svehla, Founder & Publisher of ECN. “We are 'True to the Trade,' capturing stories about news makers from various sectors like labor, general contracting, shipping, exhibit-event agencies, talent, hospitality, and beyond. It's a vast network of independent and interdependent specializations that converge to bring events to life."

Exhibit City News has transformed from its modest origins as an eight-page newsletter, born from Svehla's insights gained while working as an I&D worker at McCormick Place, Chicago. With the encouragement of industry peers, Svehla embarked on a journalistic journey, and by June 1994, the newsletter was a reality. Svehla summarizes this journey.

"We've grown with the tradeshow industry," Svehla emphasizes. "From a regional newspaper to a national publication, and now a full-color magazine and dynamic digital site that churns out fresh content. Tradeshows are content producers, and we take pride in sharing the latest news with our community."

Fueling Exhibit City News' expansion is not just its compelling content but also its steadfast advertising community, consisting of hundreds of tradeshow service organizations that have remained loyal for decades. One advertiser remarks, "Exhibit City News is a vital channel for us to tell our story and promote our brand. It's the premier platform to connect with our buyers."

In honor of its 30th anniversary, Exhibit City News is crafting a glossy commemorative magazine. This milestone publication will showcase top industry events, noteworthy news, influential figures, and more. Svehla adds, "Our commemorative magazines, previously published after 20 and 25 years, offer high-value content and serve as a tremendous advertising platform for our community. We are thrilled to announce this special edition at the Exhibit Designers & Producers Association Conference (EDPA), November 28-November 30 and the International Association of Exhibition Executives (IAEE), Expo-Expo! 23 Tradeshow, taking place from December 5-7 in Dallas, TX."

EXHIBITOR magazine is proud to announce that it has renewed its partnership with Integrated Systems Europe. As such, the Stand Design Awards will return to ISE, the largest AV systems integration show in the world, in 2024.

Now in its seventh year, the program is managed solely by EXHIBITOR magazine, an award-winning print and online magazine featuring best practices for trade show marketing. Every ISE stand will be automatically entered into the free competition and judged on site by a group of world-renowned designers and marketers.

Stands will be organized into four size-based categories: Small (30 sqm or fewer), Medium (31 – 69 sqm), Large (70 – 249 sqm), and XL (250 sqm or more). Up to 10 finalists in each category will be selected, notified on the show floor, and presented with a plaque on or before Wednesday 31 January.

One winner per category will be announced and presented with a trophy at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday 1 February.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with ISE to lead the Stand Design Awards in Barcelona,” said Emily Olson, editor of EXHIBITOR magazine. “Part of ISE’s culture is that it values exhibit and experiential design as an integral part of the event. That’s thrilling for both the EXHIBITOR team and our panel of judges, and we look forward to seeing how ISE participants use design to tell stories, attract attention, and create memories for show attendees.”

Lee Knight is an exhibit, live event, and experience industry icon who has generously created this endowment for student scholarships with his wife, Sharon Van De North.

Lee Knight, whose legendary career spans over four decades, is the founder and former CEO of EXHIBITOR Media Group. Widely recognized as the industry leader in trade show and corporate event marketing education, Knight has been instrumental in shaping the face of the trade show and event industry. Bemidji State University will award the Lee Knight Exhibit Design Scholarship to an exemplary student in the School of Technology, Art, and Design focusing on exhibit and experience design. Faculty will be looking for a "fearless designer" - an individual bold enough to take risks in design and achieve unparalleled success through those ventures. While excellence in exhibit and experience design is necessary, additional weight will go to students active in related activities and events.

"The establishment of this scholarship not only reflects the importance of designers practicing creativity and innovation in the world but also Lee Knight and Sharon Van De North's dedication to fostering budding talent," commented Dr. Sachel Josefson, Professor in the School of Technology, Art, and Design. Tradeshow Industry to Experience Transformation with Innovative Consulting Partnership

Pat Alacqua, the visionary founder of Nth Degree, and Jane Gentry, Principal of JaneGentry & Company, have joined forces to revolutionize the tradeshow industry. Leveraging their extensive expertise, with over two decades of consulting experience both within and outside the industry, they are set to empower tradeshow businesses to not only navigate the current challenges but also strategically position themselves for future success.

In the wake of unprecedented challenges such as the ongoing COVID pandemic, supply chain disruptions, a talent shortage, and economic uncertainties, owners and senior executives within the tradeshow sector have been compelled to prioritize short-term problem-solving over long-term value creation. This uncertainty is compounded by the fact that 87% of small businesses in this sector are owned by Gen X and Baby Boomers, who are grappling with questions about their long-term commitment.

Alacqua and Gentry bring a wealth of experience, introducing best practices to the tradeshow industry and a profound understanding of its intricacies. Their methodology is finely tuned to focus on the most critical aspects of value creation within a business. Pat Alacqua explains, "Every tradeshow business has its unique DNA. Our Blueprint customizes strategies to match each business's essence. The outcome? Substantial improvements in operational performance, ensuring readiness for success, be it for an imminent sale or future prospects."

Setting themselves apart from conventional consultancy models, Alacqua and Gentry adopt a hands-on, collaborative approach. This synergy combines their profound tradeshow knowledge with insights gleaned from diverse sectors, delivering unmatched perspectives and actionable strategies. Their mission is crystal clear - to enhance business appeal and intrinsic value. They don't just offer advice; they are strategic partners committed to maximizing your business's potential.

About Pat Alacqua & Jane Gentry

Together, We Can Help the Exhibitor Succeed.

By: Jessica Sibila, Executive Director, The Exhibitor Advocate

In an industry that has so many moving parts, it's difficult to know which party to hold accountable when something goes wrong. How do you explain to your client that they’re holding the wrong party accountable? When your role is all about customer service and the client is looking at you expectantly for answers, credits, and refunds, how can you possibly deny them? You can’t tell them it’s not your fault and walk away. That’s how you lose a client. And you can’t tell them to go after the truly responsible party because the contract states that party is not responsible even if it’s their fault. You’re stuck.

In our industry, no one is accountable for lost freight on the show floor. If there’s a new rule that wasn’t in the show kit, the responsibility still falls on the exhibitor to follow the rule… including whatever late charges come with it.

Typically, exhibitors rely on their exhibit house partner to help them navigate the on-site experience. These exhibitors look to their exhibit house partner not only to build the booth, but to also manage the show services, address onsite issues, and sometimes even staff their booth for them.

The challenge comes when there’s a major issue that pops up, or an expense that hits the invoice that wasn’t planned for. That’s when the client, who may have never been to a show and/or doesn’t understand how the industry works, looks at you to take financial responsibility for the surprise.

This is why you should care about The Exhibitor Advocate.

The Exhibitor Advocate, a newly formed, non-profit trade association is dedicated to exhibitors. We provide resources and tools to help exhibitors be more successful. We advocate on behalf of exhibitors for things like open communication, predictable pricing and simpler rules and regulations. We collaborate with all industry stakeholders to ensure exhibitions and events remain a valuable and irreplaceable marketing channel.

And we need your help…

As Exhibit Designers and Producers, you have direct access to the exhibitors that could benefit from membership with The Exhibitor Advocate. Membership is free because it’s critical we have as many exhibitor voices as possible. The larger our organization, the more power we have to advocate for change.

Please share our organization with your clients and guide them on how to get involved. Show your support of The Exhibitor Advocate and become a donor or sponsor. We rely on the support of our donors and sponsors to continue building our organization and provide the valuable resources and tools that support and empower all exhibitors and ensure the sustainability of our industry for the future.
