EDPA’s Future Workforce Committee
Update from Michael McMahon

Michael McMahon

EDPA Executive Committee – Future Workforce Chair

President & CEO, Hill & Partners

It’s more than just people! … or is it?

I know! You keep hearing that there are easily two open positions for every working adult in the United States right now. But that isn’t converting to easy to find new hires, or accessible high performing talent. Over the past couple of years, EDPA has given me an opportunity to engage with our membership and other organizations, on all things Future Workforce.

I imagine, if you have been navigating this industry recovery, you do not need me to tell you how it is. Nor can any honest person tell you how it is going to be. However, you would like the ground to stop shaking so we can return to what it was, so that you can plan going forward.

After all, this wouldn’t just be good for you, but also for your family, your team, your clients and your partners. Unfortunately, there are so many active and unpredictable lenses to look through, that we begin to simply wish there was a dependable “they” to get this all figured out. EDPA is much more of an US, vs. a THEM, so think of this piece as more of an invitation than a solution.

Smarter people than me will tell you that non-capital businesses are the way to go during a recession, and you just might consider opportunities that don’t rely on human capital these days. Neither of those best practices for investors or those who have a choice as employer are available to us in this industry that is centered on people and face to face live engagement.

Writing this with your valuable time in mind, I’m hoping that you see the point that I illude to in the title above. No one is coming to your aid with a list of knowledgeable, trained and motivated people are eager to join the industry in numbers that will satisfy our members and nonmembers alike. So, we have to get on with the work required to strengthen the possibility that more of those people who are actually seeking a wildly enjoyable professional career, may connect with someone in our tribe, or something that we are doing to connect with that possibility.

This is what EDPA hopes to continue to support with our Future Workforce and Future Leader initiatives, and we’re working toward content and engagement experiences that will create new ripples of opportunity for those exploring what they can do with their futures.

Tell Us About Your Company’s Future Workforce Efforts

EDPA has created a Future Workforce survey that we hope will further inform our efforts to affect positive change with respect to awareness about our industry and the amazing opportunity it presents. Please participate so that we can expand on the growing list of activity that we are currently undertaking. Take the brief survey now - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BVVCMV7

EDPA Future Workforce In Action

Below is a short list of just three very exciting engagement commitments happening in the next few months.

Williamson College of Trades - March 7th, 2023

Our EDPA Northeast Chapter is leading in this opportunity and will re-engage these trades student regarding opportunity within our industry after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The EDPA is working together with the NE Chapter to support, capture and model these types of engagements in a way that will allow us to grow and replicate industry outreach going forward.

One of our tactical approaches to engagement with students going forward is to leverage our multiyear recognition of those Future Leaders among us and within our EDPA membership community. We believe that those high performing professionals, typically under the age of 40, provide the ideal messenger profile regarding opportunity within our industry.

ExhibitorLive Engagement with Kentuckianaworks.org – April 24th, 2023

There are many ExhibitorLIVE initiatives that the EDPA has supported in the past, which have provided great evidence with Academic Institutions like BSU and FIT, that the face-to-face marketing experience has so much to offer young creatives.

The leadership at ExhibitorLIVE, along with the EDPA and members like Deckel and Moneypenney, has helped to create and expand opportunities for engagement in an environment that can share and inform others about our industry, our people and what is possible.

Steve Deckel, EDPA Board Director and steward of education initiatives for the EDPA has connected our teams with Kentuckianaworks, where we plan to host a group of influencers and students for an in depth tour of the show, as well as the show inside the show.

We plan to capture and share our success so that we may bring similar collaborations to future locations as ExhibitorLIVE contemplates a traveling annual event.

American School Counselor Association (ASCA) - July 15th -18th, 2023

April Hurley, a long-time active member of the EDPA introduced our Future Workforce Professional Labor and Trades committee chair Matthew Little with the opportunity to exhibit at the ASCA show this coming July in Atlanta. The Southeast EDPA Chapter will be taking the lead on this event, with the full support of the EDPA and a host of Future Workforce Committee members who also live and work in the Atlanta area.

ASCA, who’s membership approaches 50,000, will engage roughly 4500 School Counselors at the Conference in Atlanta this July. The EDPA sees this opportunity as a critical step in our effort to expand awareness about our industry and the long list of professional roles available to students seeking a rewarding future.

On November 20, 2022, Dana Esposito was thrown from a horse while on a charity horse ride. She suffered a broken and fractured pelvis, broken and fractured ribs, and a fractured sacrum, and she broke and fractured several of the transverse process bones in her lower back. Dana had surgery at Mass General where they inserted large screws into her pelvic bones to hold her together. After a week and a half, she was moved to Spaulding Rehab. After two and a half weeks of rigorous physical therapy, she was able to go home a week ahead of schedule and has been wheelchair-bound since Spaulding. Dana is hoping to be approved in mid-February to start PT for standing and walking. Dana plans to be walking by March 1st, which is a tad ahead of schedule, but she is a woman on a mission. Dana has been in our industry for over 25 years. She is an exhibit designer, and a creative and corporate leader, championing the success of the companies she works for, their clients, and future industry talent. She is on the EDPA Board of Directors, is the Co-chair of the EDPA University Affiliation Committee where she manages the mentorship program and was one of the founding members who restarted the EDPA Northeast chapter.
